“Accidents” allowed life to be possible on Earth. For example, the leading theory is that the moon formed when an object smashed into early Earth. It knocked earth on a tilt so we have seasons. World destroying meteors would have hit the Earth if Jupiter’s gravity hadn’t been our protector. If this hadn’t happened, the billions of small decisions made each day that shape the world economy wouldn’t be possible. No Trump, no carbon emissions, no people.

Each decision (or accident) made before us dictates our reality. Path dependence is such a powerful force, that we take it for granted. We like to think the world is shaped as such because we have free will. What made you get out of bed this morning? I bet it had something to do with a.) someone needing your care, b.) to make money, or c.) creating your reality.

Did you choose that life, or did it choose you? Did you fall into it by accident or on purpose? Why are you making the choice you made?

Opportunity cost

Buying one good means you can’t have another. Buying into one idea means you can’t have another? Think, christianity and atheism; democracy or dictatorship. Ask Augustus Caesar. Et tu, Brute?

Here’s the kicker: choosing one of two mutually exclusive actions can dictate your life and the life of those around you. Over your life, you’re going to make a fixed amount of money that you can use to vote in the global economy for the goods and services you value. The more votes you have the more power you have to dictate the future.

For example, Tesla is seen as a bet on Elon Musk’s version of the future. People like his ideas, so they shoot him their hard-earned investment dollars to play with. He invests your money in that future. OR you could go with Amazon CEO Jeff Bezo’s version of the future. AMZN, 100 Shares, *BUY @ MARKET*. He’ll find a use for them within his master scheme for world domination.

Have a Reason

In all seriousness, if you don’t have a plan for your money, why are you investing? You need to realize your life is path dependent and make consumption choices to get to your destination. You don’t need more money, you just need more of a plan.

Start making decisions with a purpose. Consume news on purpose. Organize your life to keep out the noise. No one is going to do it for you.

Our entire reality is path dependent. Control yours.

p.s. On the other hand, what if you don’t give a shit about creating your own reality? You just want to live, be happy, and make those around you happy. Guess what. Still path dependent and you have to weigh opportunity costs. Don’t let things happen by accident.
